The exercise of power (2)

A year ago, “Army” published an analysis of the geopolitical context under the title “The exercise of power.” During the period that has passed, the world situation has become evident, as political scientists would express it, in the form of a “geopolitical turbulence” that seems to be the culmination of a decade of disruptive effects caused by a set of systemic traumas that have acted like earthquakes in the geopolitical, economic and political spheres. Military technology in Spain: cyber defense

Technologies related to cyber defense require a very special breeding ground for their development. Firstly, they need a National Plan capable of organizing and channeling efforts in the appropriate direction. Secondly, the raw materials, in the form of trained personnel and specialized companies, capable of providing the appropriate technologies and tools. Thirdly, that both factors be combined based on public-private collaboration projects capable of putting all the capabilities of these companies and the State at the service of defense (and offense) in the "fifth domain." The new US National Strategy for the Arctic

The Biden Administration has recently published – and with some delay – the latest National Security Strategy, also accompanied by the new United States National Strategy for the Arctic. Although its publication may seem insignificant at first glance, given that the focus is currently on the conflict in Ukraine, the truth is that the Arctic is destined to continue gaining prominence in the national security strategies of many countries during the coming decades. The evolution of the climate, the abundant resources and the presence and activities of countries with a coast (or not) on it, point towards a clear growth in its importance. The expansion of jihadism from the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea

Like dominoes, country after country, after the Sahel, the influence of jihadism through groups like JNIM, is gradually taking hold in the area of the Gulf of Guinea, in West Africa. There is talk of JNIM, the affiliate of Al Qaeda, because its strategy of leaving aside global jihad to focus on the local level seems to be having some success, but it is not the only group, we must also take into account the branch of Daesh . After Ivory Coast, Benin and Togo, Ghana is another of the territories in which armed groups move and establish their networks, although without violent attacks to this day. A process in which various factors interact, with more than one cause, and whose solution is not quick nor, of course, does it seem easy. So far, the expansion of jihadism in the region [Keep reading…]

The microchip war

The trade and technological war between the United States and China has only just begun, a confrontation in which the European Union is trying to join, although it is at a disadvantage. At the moment it seems difficult to predict the effects that the internal protectionist policies that the actors involved are adopting will produce in the medium and long term on technological development and international relations. However, it is easy to draw a powerful conclusion: contemporary powers are learning by force that there are national sectors that must be independent of third actors. The manufacturing and design of microchips is one of them. (Continue…) Dear reader, this article is exclusively for paying users. Tactical maneuver as a means to achieve operational victories

Through this article, a conceptual abstraction, the aim is to develop a theory on the use of tactical maneuver as a military approach of the Armed Forces through which to achieve operational objectives, and even depending on the context in the war theater, strategic ones. The adoption of this approach will be possible thanks to modern command, control and communication systems, as well as the capabilities in intelligence and processing of the data obtained by it. All of this within a hypothetical framework of modern war of conventional, asymmetric aggression of high attrition and high intensity, where the attacked State is inferior in numbers and equipment-material with respect to the aggressor State. ETA, Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel

In the 1980s, Colombian drug trafficking launched harsh armed offensives in its war against extradition. In those years, a member of ETA taught the Medellín Cartel how to attack with car bombs. Thus, this terrorist tactic was used hundreds of times by Pablo Escobar's hitmen, leaving thousands of dead throughout the Latin American country. In addition, attacks with remote-controlled explosives were also used by the Cali Cartel, with whom ETA would negotiate, years later, to mediate with the Calabrian mafia. The tactical ground nuclear battle in Ukraine

The use of tactical (or non-strategic) nuclear weapons on the terrestrial battlefield is much more difficult to visualize and understand than is popularly assumed. In general, the usual thing is to simply extrapolate the apocalyptic images of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and then deduce that carrying out a few attacks with nuclear artillery fire would cause extremely destructive effects that would annihilate an enemy army with relative ease. Conflict

Nuclear war in ukraine

The war in Ukraine seems to be heading, step by step and inexorably, towards the first use of nuclear weapons, something unprecedented since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. It is the consequence of the passage, for years, towards a Second Nuclear Age and the normalization of the concept of Offensive Deterrence, which Russia has been putting into practice since the early stages of the conflict to modulate the degree of Western involvement. If Russia finally, faced with the threat of complete military defeat and the loss of conquered territories, resorts to atomic weapons, it will have done nothing other than confirm some of the theories that we explain in this article.
