How will the coronavirus pandemic impact maritime safety?

The effect on defense budgets, navigation, piracy, human trafficking, drug trafficking and private security

Making predictions in the field of security is always risky. Just a year ago, few could imagine that a pandemic was going to so seriously affect the societies and economies of a large part of the planet. Commercial shipping, on which 90% of world trade depends, has also been implicated. Not only in the foreseeable impact that the crisis will cause in the reduction of trade or the interruption, at least momentarily, of the cruise business. It will also have its effects in the maritime security section. Whether they are permanent or not will depend, as in other sectors, on the duration of the pandemic, the response capacity of some countries and the adaptation of the industry itself to the new situation.
