The European Union decided on March 31 to launch Operation Irini ("peace" in Greek). Based in Rome, the officially named EUNAVFOR MED IRINI has as its background the unsuccessful EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA operation, deployed in June 2015 with the intention of combating illegal immigration in the Mediterranean.
