SEAD and Air War in Ukraine (I)

The air war in Ukraine has left us several unknowns, starting with the discreet role that the Russian Air Force played, especially during the first weeks of the conflict. The superiority that Russian aviation exhibited on paper, both in number of devices, as well as in quality and quantity of weapons, as well as in the accumulated experience of its pilots, remained a dead letter as they were incapable of operating freely due to the action. of Ukrainian aviation and, especially, anti-aircraft artillery. This forced Russia to adapt, something it has done with relative success, relegating some devices in favor of others and changing tactics, all of which should be a subject of study. Chechnya: a war of innovation?

Innovations, new contexts, new weapons and new lessons constitute a whole that conditions the outcome of conflicts. Much has been said, in the case of the Chechen rebels, especially after their victory in the Battle of Grozny, about their ability to innovate, some authors even stating that what happened there was a true revolution. Throughout this article we are going to try to find out which innovations - in a broad sense - influenced both the First Chechen War (1994-1996) and the Second Chechen War (1999-2009). Normally, when talking about arms trafficking, reference is made to the illegal sale and purchase of handguns by individuals or criminal organizations. More interesting, however, is the trafficking of war weapons, especially on a large scale. Carried out by insurgent and paramilitary groups, terrorists and, increasingly, mafias of all kinds, it moves real fortunes. On too many occasions in collusion with governments interested in waging subsidiary wars such as the proxy war in Libya or the war in Syria.
