The Battle of Najaf III

After the events of the first week of August 2004, the situation in Najaf had turned towards a tense calm, a prelude to what would follow. The first skirmishes had given way to a full-fledged battle when the marines of the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment, under the command of Lieutenant (Lt) Colonel (Col) Mayer intervened in order to prevent an assault by cleric al Sadr's militiamen on the city's main police station. The first exchanges of fire were the trigger for both sides to deploy more troops to a fight that in its final phases pitted the entire Marine battalion against thousands of Iraqis. Armageddon at Stalingrad

"Armageddon in Stalingrad" is the second part of the "Stalingrad Tetralogy" written by David M. Glantz in collaboration with Jonathan M. House and published in Spain by Desperta Ferro. It is a work that takes us to the vital quarter that, between September and November 1942, marked the failure of the German Blitzkrieg and marked the maximum advance that the Germans would reach before engaging in a war of attrition that they could only lose. The naval war in Yemen

In March 2015, the tanks of the Houthi coup plotters and the Yemeni army loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh managed to reach the last large city controlled by the government of Abd Rabbu Mansur al-Hadi. At that moment the Saudis, seeing their man fall, decided to intervene definitively to support the latter, initiating a series of operations that cannot be understood without considering the maritime scenario, surely the most unknown dimension of this bloody conflict. Thought and War

Ediciones Encuentro has published in Spanish the set of essays, written by the French philosopher Jean Guitton between the 40s and 60s of the last century and collected in its original French edition of 1969 under the title “Thought and War.” This Spanish edition, which is in turn based on another French one published a couple of years ago, far from collecting only the essays - cycles of conferences, rather -, has interesting prologues for each of its chapters, written by prominent French officers. The comments, which significantly increase their value, help to clarify Guitton's ideas for those who, like the person who writes, are not accustomed to the particular philosophical language. Kingdoms of faith

The Reconquista is a myth. A beautiful myth, a necessary myth, a myth that has served to unify a country and a series of peoples around a historical destiny, yes, but a myth and as such, an invention. We can argue about the more or less real part of the myth, about the fabled part, about its convenience and about a million other things, but, whether we like it or not, if we really want to understand that historical period, the first thing we have to do is is to demystify it. That's what Brian A. Catlos does in "Kingdoms of Faith." A new history of Muslim Spain", a superb book that has arrived in Spain from the publisher Pasado & Presente. The future of the Spanish Navy

The future of the Spanish Navy is at risk. However, the strategic need to have an effective navy is beyond doubt for a country with the geographical characteristics of Spain. Likewise, the obligation to safeguard the nation's last and most influential economic and industrial asset in the defense sector, shipbuilding, is also a fact. Unfortunately, the budgetary situation - and its foreseeable evolution - requires a deeply realistic examination in order to save what is possible.
