Arms trafficking: an introduction

Arms trafficking has always been a controversial, practically taboo topic. Furthermore, a topic that has been fantasized about too much, generally due to lack of knowledge. Despite the image associated with Hollywood movies, the reality is more prosaic. Normally, when talking about arms trafficking, reference is made to the illegal sale and purchase of handguns by individuals or criminal organizations. More interesting, however, is the trafficking of war weapons, especially on a large scale. Carried out by insurgent and paramilitary groups, terrorists and, increasingly, mafias of all kinds, it moves real fortunes. On too many occasions in collusion with governments interested in waging subsidiary wars such as the proxy war in Libya or the war in Syria. Introduction to Strategic Studies

Today we have to comment on a classic title, "Introduction to Strategic Studies: Military Technology and International Relations", written by the professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics Barry Buzan in the mid-80s and published for the first time in English. in 1987 by the current Palgrave Macmillan. Fortunately for the Spanish-speaking public, the Ministry of Defense saw fit to translate and edit it in Spanish, bringing it to light in 1991 within the Army Editions collection. The renewal of the Italian Navy

The Italian Navy is at a key moment. In addition to the new threats and the redefinition of its naval strategy in response to them, there is the need to renew a good part of the ships in service, if it does not want to see this reduced by a third in the coming years. That is why they have recently published a series of documents and works that tell us both about an "elongated Mediterranean" and an "infinite Mediterranean" and have launched ambitious shipbuilding plans aimed at building new surface ships and submarines. If its plans come to fruition, Italy will ensure not only its presence in the Mare Nostrum, but far beyond, establishing itself as a key player at the regional level. S-40 “Riachuelo” submarine accident

In recent days the accident of the Brazilian submarine S-40 Riachuelo has been in the news. As far as we know, it hit bottom after a water ingress while it was inside the Itaguaí base. So far, the Marinha do Brasil has not clarified an incident that, however, does not have many possible causes. Nor has any damage analysis been published, despite which - and always with caution - we can assure that they will be substantial and will require a significant review and investment. Throughout the next lines we will explain both the causes and the actions of the crew and the possible consequences of this accident, relying on graphs and the abundant data we have about the Scorpene. Guardian 30 by Escribano Mechanical & Engineering

After many ideas and comings and goings, the VCR 8×8 program seems to be moving forward with the assignment of the contract to the TESS Defense consortium, of which Escribano Mechanical & Engineering (EM&E) is a part. The Madrid company will be in charge of the design and manufacturing of the weapons systems, starting with the Guardian 30 tower, to which we dedicate this article. A novel design, the result of the ability of EM&E's young engineers to take advantage of the design and simulation tools and the advanced machinery that they have at their disposal at their headquarters in Alcalá de Henares and that allows them to renounce techniques such as casting or welding, betting everything on high precision machining. A different solution whose characteristics we analyze in depth in the following lines. A few days ago we had the opportunity to visit both the Escribano Mechanical & Engineering factory in Alcalá de Henares, as well as the old facilities [Keep reading…]

The division step

The division echelon has been, in recent years, put aside in favor of others such as the brigade, something that should change to face new threats. As we know, the end of the Cold War and the involvement of Western armies in modern conflicts, of a hybrid or asymmetric type, have relegated the role of traditional division. However, not only has the reborn influence and aggressive foreign policy of the Russian Federation revalued conventional conflict and with it, the use of divisions; It has also become clear that in numerous phases of current conflicts, the level of command and control deployed by brigades is not sufficient to manage all the aspects that converge in these war scenarios. Electromagnetic guns and missile defence

It is increasingly common to see articles on specialized sites and in the press about electromagnetic cannons (Electro Magnetic Rail Gun or EMRG). Articles that claim that anti-missile defense can be revolutionized by this type of cannon, currently under development for naval forces such as the US Navy or the Chinese PLAN, but which can also be installed on land. In this National Interest article it was said, nothing more and nothing less, that North Korea's missile threat could be nullified by the EMRG and the supposed revolution they represent. Things, however, are far from being so simple. (Continue…) Dear reader, this article is exclusively for paying users. Maritime patrol in Spain (I)

The importance of maritime patrol is beyond doubt. Especially for a country like Spain, with almost five thousand kilometers of coastline, an Exclusive Economic Zone of more than one million square kilometers. A nation located in a unique geographical position that allows us to control the Strait of Gibraltar. All, moreover, at a time when the countries around us are strengthening their navies and in a framework of competition between great powers in which submarine warfare has and will continue to play a fundamental role. Also at a time when problems such as illegal immigration, drug trafficking or even terrorism require means capable of recording any activity, no matter how irrelevant it may seem, on or under the surface of the sea. The Battle of Tora Bora and the Escape of Osama Bin Laden

Almost twenty years ago, at the end of 2001, the attention of the world's media was focused on what was the largest operation to capture or eliminate a single individual. Osama Bin Laden, accompanied by hundreds of followers who were part of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, along with members of the Afghan Taliban government, were fleeing harassment from the most capable military forces on the planet. Surrounded by a corner of Afghanistan very close to the border with Pakistan and known as Tora Bora, monitored by a constellation of satellites and bombed by the most powerful aerial means, despite having everything against them, they managed to escape and take refuge in the neighboring country. where he was lost track of for years. Greek Air Force

If there is a country that was affected by the 2008 crisis, it was Greece. The economic collapse, the increase in unemployment and the consequent drop in revenues stopped the investment in acquisitions of its Ministry of Defense in its tracks. After more than a decade of hardships in which both the capacity of the Greek Air Force and its future were called into question, they have finally begun to take the first firm steps to get out of the hole in which they found themselves. There have been years of contradictory information, rejected contracts and successive denials. Finally, the Πολεμική Αεροπορία (Polemikí Aeroporía) is emerging from its deep lethargy and is doing so with a single objective in mind: stopping Turkey. Really, nothing else could be expected from Greece in recent years. Their situation, being worse, is not far from that experienced by Spain, where the new [Keep reading…]
