Hamas's war against Israel (V): operation "Iron Swords"

For more than a decade and a half, Israel has confronted Hamas in Gaza, with cycles of violence and intense fighting followed by periods of relative calm. A time in which it has been possible to observe how urban warfare in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has mutated and how an advanced army, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has evolved and innovated at all levels - from operational to organizational culture, through technology - to combat a weaker, but extremely adaptable, decentralized irregular force, with relative firepower thanks to the “democratization of lethality” and capable of camouflaging itself among the civilian population and “disappearing” in broad daylight. In this sense, the experiences acquired during the urban combats within the framework of the Second Intifada, added to the lessons learned through US operations in the War Against [Keep reading…]

Hamas's war against Israel (I): the Hamas raid

The attack by the Hamas terrorist group against Israel began without warning, at approximately 6:30 in the morning on Saturday - Sabbath, a holiday for the Jewish community that also marked the end of the Simchat Torah holiday - 7 October 2023; Just almost 50 years after the surprise attack carried out by Egyptian and Syrian forces that began the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Just as then, the action has taken the Israeli intelligence and security services completely by surprise –26 of its 31 active battalions were deployed in the North of the country - causing very significant casualties - especially civilians - and leading the country back to war in the south, while remaining on alert in case it suffers an attack from the north by Hezbollah. Vuhledar: much more than a battle

The town of Vuhkedar has witnessed some of the bloodiest actions of the Ukrainian war, especially after successive Russian attempts to take it from the south, trying to break defenses that benefited from the particular orography of the city and the existence of buildings of a certain height. However, Vuhledar is much more than a small mining town, because due to its position it is the ideal springboard through which to project itself throughout the Southern Front of Ukraine, something that Russians and Ukrainians try to take advantage of in their favor and that heralds new fighting in the near future. Neither Kreminna, nor Soledar: they are the bend and bend of the Donets River!

In recent months, the war in Ukraine has left us atrocious images of destruction in towns such as Liman, Severodonetsk, Lysychansk or more recently Soledar and Bakhmut. Despite the importance given by the media and even by the statements of both contenders, the value of all of them has nothing to do with their population, resources or position, but with the control of two axes of advance with different operational objectives but a common point: the curve and bend formed by the Donets River. Tactical maneuver as a means to achieve operational victories

Through this article, a conceptual abstraction, the aim is to develop a theory on the use of tactical maneuver as a military approach of the Armed Forces through which to achieve operational objectives, and even depending on the context in the war theater, strategic ones. The adoption of this approach will be possible thanks to modern command, control and communication systems, as well as the capabilities in intelligence and processing of the data obtained by it. All of this within a hypothetical framework of modern war of conventional, asymmetric aggression of high attrition and high intensity, where the attacked State is inferior in numbers and equipment-material with respect to the aggressor State. The Kharkiv Offensive (II)

Between September 6 and 13, 2022, the ZSU (Zbroini syly Ukrainy-Ukrainian Armed Forces) executed an ambitious counteroffensive maneuver against the western flank of the Russian projection in Izyum-Kupyansk, Kharkiv Oblast. Tactical manoeuvre with operational goals: the secret of Ukraine's success

What has been the determining element of Ukrainian success in stopping the Russian invasion? Without a doubt, having at their disposal unique information, provided by the United States, the United Kingdom and other NATO member states, has been key, allowing the Ukrainians to anticipate every Russian move. However, having more and better information is not of much use if you do not have the necessary capabilities to take advantage of it. Ukraine, thanks to the training of its non-commissioned officers and officers, their greater freedom from stagnant Russian doctrines, having modern weapons at its disposal, as well as the possibility of communicating and coordinating its small units in real time, has managed to make tactical maneuver with operational - and even strategic - objectives, the key element of its successful defense. In this article we explain the reasons and [Keep reading…]
