Growing up, I liked listening to Freundeskreis, a German hip-hop reggae group. One of his songs states that "history is something that happened a long time ago or that always happens without you." It was the late 1990s, I was sitting in my room in the West German suburbs, and I distinctly remember thinking how right this seemed to me.
