The third wave

The book that we bring up in this issue is, although at first glance it may seem otherwise, fundamental when it comes to understanding much of what has been written and done in the last three decades on the military level, both in the most theoretically, as well as practically. Alvin Toffler, its author - always with the help of his wife, Heidi - was a very particular character, a futurist who in just a handful of works, among which it is worth mentioning “The Shock of the Future”, “The Change of Power”, “The Wealth Revolution”, “The Wars of the Future” and, of course, “The Third Wave”, managed to quite successfully advance many of the trends that define our current society. Revered by many - and reviled by many others - his vision of history, divided into waves and outlined in broad strokes, has inspired authors of all classes and conditions and [Keep reading…]

Dismantling the nuclear-powered fleet I

Decommissioning a nuclear-powered ship is a long and technically difficult process due to the need to properly handle not only the fuel, but any hazardous material, from coolants to irradiated material. A process that few can carry out on their own and, even among these, even fewer can afford it. In order to make the text more understandable, instead of presenting several cases at the same time - since each country is a world even if it seems like a truism -, we are going to divide the article into two parts. This first one, we will dedicate to the Russian case, the most studied thanks not only to the work of organizations like Bellona, but also to the obligation on the part of the Russian Federation to bring to light all types of data to benefit from the funds of the Nunn agreement. -Place of 1991. The mutualisation of casualties in combat

The European construction has involved a process similar to that of a large building; After the foundations - the Coal and Steel Community - came the next phase of raising pillars, columns and floors - the different treaties of the European Communities - until the roof and the laurel branch were placed at the top with the Treaty of Lisbon. Now we are in the phase of partitioning the floors, installing electricity and plumbing. Part of this corresponds to the Europe of Defense, which seems to march in these times with a step that, if not firm, is at least cheerful. Strategic stability

The question of strategic stability and nuclear weapons is one of those issues that at first glance have a direct and easy answer, but once we begin to investigate and delve deeper into the details, a multitude of paradoxes and contradictory effects appear. In a broad sense, strategic stability is usually defined as the absence of incentives for one country to launch a first attack against another, for fear of the costs and damages it could suffer in retaliation. The question is, however, not so simple. (Continue…) Dear reader, this article is exclusively for paying users. The Battle of Najaf III

After the events of the first week of August 2004, the situation in Najaf had turned towards a tense calm, a prelude to what would follow. The first skirmishes had given way to a full-fledged battle when the marines of the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment, under the command of Lieutenant (Lt) Colonel (Col) Mayer intervened in order to prevent an assault by cleric al Sadr's militiamen on the city's main police station. The first exchanges of fire were the trigger for both sides to deploy more troops to a fight that in its final phases pitted the entire Marine battalion against thousands of Iraqis.
