The Brownout Effect

The phenomenon known as brownout that helicopter crews suffer is a situation in which there is a total or partial lack of visibility in the cabin generated by the dust and sand that are removed by the slipstream of the rotors, mainly during take-off and landing maneuvers in areas arid Similar situations can arise in operations over snowy areas called W, and also, although with less intensity, in maneuvers over water. These phenomena that generate what is known as Degraded Visual Environments (DVE) require that pilots depend largely on the instruments, adequate coordination and communication with the rest of the crew, as well as their experience and expertise at the controls.
