The war in Ukraine and the battles in urban areas

In the current war in Ukraine it is difficult to find a battle[1] in which a town of some magnitude is not involved and, frequently, that urban area has been the main objective of the battle. The present work tries to analyze, in general terms, the tactical aspects of the main battles of this war, generally battles in urban areas, starting with the great city of kyiv, the main Russian objective of the "special military operation" that failed and , with it the short war that the Russians wanted. Mathematical models for combat simulation

Current armies, the prospective on which they base a good part of their acquisition plans, doctrinal changes and many other critical aspects are not fully understood if we do not pay attention to the role that mathematical models play in combat simulation. These allow the development of credible war games on the basis of which planners can determine the type and number of forces necessary to guarantee victory, if necessary, and, more important than this, deterrence, so that the opportunity does not arise for having to confront theory with reality. Despite this, and the efforts that have been made in the last century, the mathematical models for combat simulation are still insufficient to capture the complexity of the battlefield, which forces us to redouble efforts as it is a capital area. The Navy before the Revolution in Military Affairs

Recent years have seen unprecedented changes, driven by the emergence of revolutionary technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and advances in quantum computing. These technologies are not only reshaping the global security landscape, but also demand a re-evaluation of traditional strategies and tactics in the military sphere. In this context, the Navy is facing a critical crossroads, with the obligation to quickly adapt to these disruptive changes to maintain its relevance and effectiveness. The French aircraft carrier program PANG (Porte-avions de nouvelle génération)

The French Ministry of Defense has been working for years to provide the Marine Nationale with a new nuclear aircraft carrier to replace the R-91 “Charles de Gaulle”, in service for more than two decades and, therefore, in the second half of its useful life, which will end around 2038. The future ship, known for the moment by its acronym PANG (Porte-avions de nouvelle génération), will have a length and beam substantially greater than those of the current French aircraft carrier, will have two new generation K22 nuclear reactors and will enjoy an air wing of more than 40 devices, including an unknown number of drones. It will also be an example of the balance that France pursues between strategic autonomy and collaboration with third parties. Despite everything, and barring surprise, its arrival will not contribute to solving the problems derived from having a single cover. (Continues…) Dear reader, this [Keep reading…]

Fundamentals of tactics II

In this second chapter dedicated to the fundamentals of tactics, we will leave behind the most basic notions related to the concept of "Battle Group" to focus on the use of light armored forces, dealing with the composition of a Cavalry Group (CGAB). to the functions that correspond to it, such as reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. This type of units, although they are well known in the material aspect, are affected by serious conditions in their mode of use, given their particularities, which clearly distinguishes them from the rest of armored units, something that well deserves this article. C-UAS Defense (I): Basics

Governments like the Spanish one, with limited means, have opted for a mitigation strategy when dealing with the threat posed by small, low-cost UAS (Unmanned Air Systems). The same occurs with a good part of our neighbors and allies, including the all-powerful United States, which declare themselves incapable of guaranteeing security in the face of constantly evolving ingenuities and which have altered in a short time any cost relationship between attack and defense. . While waiting for the passage of time and the logic of technological innovation to balance the situation, C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Air Systems) means advance in tow of an increasingly complex threat, dividing between those who pursue the increasingly difficult physical destruction (hardkill), its neutralization through jamming or spoofing (softkill) or those that use a combination of both approaches. The Air and Space Army: a multidimensional future

The handling, since its very creation, of “cutting-edge technology” means at each historical moment, has marked the imprint of what we now know as the Air and Space Army. A perennial need that has demanded of its members not only to be intellectually trained and move in a dangerous and unnatural dimension, but to always be updated and permanently have a vision towards the future; clear consequence of having to function in a highly changing environment, where obsolescence and scientific advances prevent relaxation and force us to remain especially attentive to changes and, as far as possible, to anticipate them. Shipbuilding in the Russian Federation (II)

The fall of the Soviet Union led to tectonic changes in the international arena. Not in vain did a State disappear in a matter of days that in less than a century of existence had achieved superpower status, achieved influence on a global scale and built Armed Forces capable of operating throughout the world. Furthermore, it was a leading industrial power, also in the naval field, causing its implosion to create a void that the surviving Russian shipyards have never been able to fill. Thus, despite efforts to reorganize and increase production, shipbuilding in the Russian Federation continues to face enormous challenges and suffer from important shortcomings, which deserve to be analyzed. The tactical change of China's anti-submarine warfare

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) seeks to increase its presence and submarine dominance in the South China Sea against the US Navy and its Silent Service[1]. China has been working on improving its anti-submarine capability for the past few decades. Today, a fixed underwater surveillance network known as the “Great Underwater Wall” monitors the waters east and south of China, as well as submarine transit routes from Guam to Hawaii.[2] Recently, they have built a new class of double-hull surveillance vessel, similar in size and configuration to the US Navy's Impeccable class (T-AGOS 23), which is used to deploy SURTASS towed surveillance acoustic sensor systems (of the English Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System). These systems are complemented by aerial, submarine and surface platforms with active low-range sonars. [Keep reading…]

FPV drone used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. While the idea that we are facing a military revolution or even a change in the nature of warfare is tempting, a deeper examination yields somewhat different results. Even so, drones are being the protagonists of the Revolution in Military Robotics Affairs and their impact, if Defense Ministries such as the Spanish one do not take quick and decisive measures, investing in "red teams" and in an indigenous industry, threatens with dragging ourselves. The third military revolution

The war in Ukraine is leaving us with shocking images and incredible figures, many of them related in one way or another to the emergence of drones on the battlefield. Its massive use, given its ridiculous cost and its very high lethality, has completely disrupted the calculations of costs and benefits, putting the advantage of the spear side over the shield at the tactical level and causing paralysis at the operational and strategic levels. Although these are changes of enormous magnitude, they do not imply - as some authors claim - neither a change in the nature of war, nor a Military Revolution comparable to the one that once brought about the arrival of gunpowder in Europe. In fact, that of drones is one more of the Revolutions in Military Affairs associated - here it is correct to use this term - to which [Keep reading…]
