Issue 16

July 2020

The world is immersed in a process of accelerated change. It is obvious and in our Issue 16 we are not going to invent the wheel, far from it. However, not because it is something obvious, we should stop paying attention to its consequences and implications. Had the US done so, implementing all the developments that have sprung up at the whim of the Information RMA instead of getting bogged down in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, its current power differential vis-a-vis Russia and especially China would be much favourable, as we explained when speaking of the Military Transformation.

In any case, this has not prevented progress from continuing. Proof of this is the growing role that underwater drones have in naval warfare, or the implementation of programs such as the US FRLAA. By the way, this is actually the first part of a double article dedicated to the future of US Army helicopters that will be distributed between this issue 16 and the next Issue 17, with the second part focusing on the programme of the future attack helicopter.

Others who advance are the Australians. An exemplary country, committed to its defence and thanks to Navantia its Navy and that maintains a close relationship with Spain. Alejandro A. Vilches Alarcón examines in detail the present and future of the Royal Australian Navy in an article that is difficult to read without feeling envious.

Rafael López Mercado, for his part, takes us this time to the 2006 Lebanon War, where the Israelis fell into the trap set by Hezbollah and, although they achieved a military victory, they lost the media war, passing the campaign to the books of History as a failure.

As if all this were not enough, in this Issue 16 we also talk about the organic. Particulrly, the ways to guide it depending on whether you are looking for effectiveness, efficiency or both. Our commanders should be very attentive to this article by Roberto Gutiérrez…

Finally, once again, our observatories, which talk about such exciting topics as quantum computing or North Korea's nuclear strategy, which few understand, beyond the commonplaces. Thank you once again for reading us.
