The Turkish Straits and the right of passage of Russian Submarines

A brief review of international legislation on maritime straits and the passage of warships

The past 23 of June an upgraded russian kilo class submarine crossed the Turkish Straits, westward, leaving the Black Sea and entering the Mediterranean[1]. This news was quickly relayed via Twitter by Yörük Işık[2], one of the many naval observers who are dedicated to photographing ships and who collaborates with the prestigious Jane's Fighting Ships[3]. It was not the first time that a Russian submarine transited the Turkish Straits, but the second time it did so in a westward direction.[4].
