The impossible European Navy

Huge resources, poorly used

The EU cannot be a great power if it lacks a European Navy as it does. However, as Mark Eyskens masterfully stated, "The European Union is an economic giant, a political dwarf and a military worm." In fact, this phrase, published in the days before Operation Desert Storm, is even truer today than it was almost three decades ago. At that time, many European armies had at their disposal the stocks of material typical of the Cold War. Today, the "peace dividends", the disparity of interests between the 27 partners, the weight of companies capable of corrupting any initiative and ideological obstacles, have transformed the EU into little less than a bacteria from a defensive point of view. . He Brexit, on the other hand, although collaboration with the United Kingdom will continue to be intense, only aggravates a wound that does not seem to have a short-term cure. The most serious problem, however, is another: the lack of a common strategy.
