France declared a few days ago its decision to end Operation Barkhane in the Sahel. The question now arises regarding the consequences that this decision could imply for security in Mali, neighboring countries and a hypothetical increase in the jihadist threat against Europe. A topic discussed a few months ago by the RAND Corporation, an institution that brought together several experts in regional security in the Sahel to debate the implications of a then hypothetical French withdrawal from Mali and the end of Operation Barkhane. The arguments put forward in the debate were published following Chatham House style rules (preserving the anonymity of the participants to encourage speculation and free debate).
