The desperate strategic context behind the order to kill Soleimani

The decision to attack and kill Soleimani was not an act of madness, but almost the only option if the US did not want to leave a majority of Iraqis stranded.

The order to assassinate Qasem Soleimani given by Trump could have been a very desperate and risky act, but not an act of madness or lack of strategic sense. For example, General David Petraeus, a deep connoisseur of Iraqi power struggles and who managed to subdue the Sunni and Shiite insurgencies during the time of the "Surge" in Iraq, stated in an interview with Foreign Policy published on January 3, that the Trump's decision may have had the virtue of having deterrence restored to Iran, and stop the Iranian and Soleimani strategy of expelling the US from Iraq and taking power of the Iraqi government, through political puppets of Iran.
