The political-military context

The current cycle of violence between Israel and Hamas, as well as with the other militant groups in Gaza (Hamas and Islamic Jihad are the two main ones, but there are myriad smaller groups), has its immediate origins in the issue of forced evictions of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, and the incidents around the Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa mosque. Surprisingly, Hamas gave an ultimatum to Israel to withdraw its security forces from Sheikh Jarrah and the Al-Aqsa mosque on May 10.
