Cybercriminals have crossed the red lines and now it's time to face the consequences. The cyber attack on Colonial is the most serious known to date against a US energy infrastructure. The typology of the attack, ransomware as a service, is not new, but it has been a wake-up call about this growing threat, increasingly sophisticated and lucrative. A threat, among other things, due to its impact in the real world, as has been the case in this case, with panic unleashed, lines at gas stations to fill vehicle tanks, several states of emergency and urgent federal legislation to stop the crisis. What happened has worried not only in the US but also globally and has led to some changes, in the short term at least, in the ransomware ecosystem, hence the relevance of this serious “incident”.
