Russian books and propaganda

During the Cold War, periodically, books appeared both in the United States and in the countries of Western Europe - although not only, since the phenomenon also occurred in the Soviet Union, in China and among the non-aligned - that were simply At first glance they seemed serious and rigorous but, after a leisurely analysis, they revealed more malicious intentions. Some of them were the spontaneous work of authors who really had certain beliefs and defended them motu proprio through their pen. Many others, however, had been written and financed by intelligence services on both sides. A practice that for a time fell into relative disuse, but that little by little seems to be returning. Hamas's war against Israel (II): drones and lessons for Spain

At this point, there is little to say about the barbarism unleashed by the Hamas terrorist organization on Israeli soil in recent days. The overwhelming death toll and the images that appeared on social networks and the media provide ample testimony to what happened. There are, however, aspects that are far from what the general media can cover and that are particularly worrying for countries like Spain, such as the use given by Hamas to certain drones, modified to circumvent Israeli C-UAS systems that, to make matters worse, , have just been recently acquired by our Air Force… (Continues…) Dear reader, this article is exclusive for paying users. FPV drone used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. While the idea that we are facing a military revolution or even a change in the nature of warfare is tempting, a deeper examination yields somewhat different results. Even so, drones are being the protagonists of the Revolution in Military Robotics Affairs and their impact, if Defense Ministries such as the Spanish one do not take quick and decisive measures, investing in "red teams" and in an indigenous industry, threatens with dragging ourselves. The third military revolution

The war in Ukraine is leaving us with shocking images and incredible figures, many of them related in one way or another to the emergence of drones on the battlefield. Its massive use, given its ridiculous cost and its very high lethality, has completely disrupted the calculations of costs and benefits, putting the advantage of the spear side over the shield at the tactical level and causing paralysis at the operational and strategic levels. Although these are changes of enormous magnitude, they do not imply - as some authors claim - neither a change in the nature of war, nor a Military Revolution comparable to the one that once brought about the arrival of gunpowder in Europe. In fact, that of drones is one more of the Revolutions in Military Affairs associated - here it is correct to use this term - to which [Keep reading…]

Force multiplier

Today a crucial meeting is being held at NATO Headquarters in Zaventem, Brussels, in which the Defense Ministers of the Member States and some of the main companies in the sector will participate: an event to which no Spanish company has been invited. The reaction of the Ministry of Defense, boycotting the event and refusing to attend as a protest, can be understood as that of a sore loser who, after not having tried hard enough, blames others for his inaction. It is therefore time to talk about the reasons why Spain is excluded from this type of events and about the possible solutions, which in all cases involve assigning more personnel to specific positions abroad. That and no other is the authentic “force multiplier” that our Defense industry needs to grow. (Continues…) Dear reader, this [Keep reading…]

FEINDEF 2023: lights and shadows

One more edition, and now there are three, the Spanish Defense fair par excellence, has taken place at IFEMA (Madrid), bringing together most of the national companies in the sector and also some foreign ones. Having learned some of the lessons from the last two editions, FEINDEF 2023 has generally been better articulated, has occupied a larger area, accommodating more than 400 exhibitors and has served to convene a good number of international delegations. However, in terms of hiring - which is how the success of these events is usually measured - the result has once again been disappointing, as well as in terms of presentation of new products. Logistics, stupid!

The war in Ukraine has placed us before a scenario that very few believed possible: a conventional, high-intensity war. To make matters worse, on European soil. Beyond the human tragedy it entails, the course of the fighting is leaving us valuable lessons, especially useful for the armed forces of Western nations. One of them has to do with logistics, a true Achilles heel of modern armies and which, with the Ukrainian experience in hand, we have the obligation to completely rethink. Dual technologies

For decades, military developments have in most cases been far ahead of their civilian counterparts. There are many examples of technologies that emerged at the risk of war that later, adapted to civilian uses, have led to enormous advances and revolutionized the lives of ordinary people. However, there are many fewer occasions in which the opposite has occurred. For a few years now, however, there has been an interesting change in this situation, motivated by massive investment in civil R&D as a tool to maintain competitiveness, which is leading to many everyday products and solutions being subsequently adapted for use. military use; a real revolution. The Spanish defense industry, in need of funds to pay for new research and development programs, has been looking for a lifeline in dual technologies and an opportunity to access financing, both [Keep reading…]

The enigmas and difficulties of sending tanks to Ukraine

The sending of battle tanks to Ukraine (Leopard 2, Abrams and Challenger) is an unequivocal example of Western commitment to this country. Once the Russian bet has been accepted to transform what should have been a quick operation into a war of attrition, upon arrival they will allow the formation of at least three new armored battalions, with material on paper superior in many cases to its Russian counterpart. However, given the enormous logistical, training and integration problems that sending battle tanks to Ukraine entails, the decision could contribute much more from a political-strategic point of view than from an operational and tactical point of view. The anti-submarine capabilities of the F-110 frigates

The F-110 frigates have the difficult mission of replacing the F-80s, which have provided such good service, returning to the Navy part of the anti-submarine capabilities that we have neglected for decades. To do this, they use an anti-submarine suite provided by Thales and SAES that includes top-level equipment, on par with navies such as the US Navy or the French Marine Nationale. Thanks to this, they will constitute the core of a force that will be completed in the future with the capabilities provided by the S-80 submarines and future maritime patrol aircraft, manned or not. Although the next few years are far from promising, as there is a lot of work to be done – as much as there has been institutional neglect, the F-110 frigates constitute a great first step. In January 2013, the Military Capabilities Objective 2013-2016 was published, which included the [Keep reading…]
