New horizons in Underwater Acoustic Detection

Since the invention of ships and their use in wars, it has always been vitally important to know the position and size of the enemy fleet. With the appearance of the submarine, it was necessary to develop novel methods capable of counteracting its effectiveness. Since electromagnetic waves (radar) transmit very poorly in an aqueous medium, mechanical waves (sound) were used as a means of detecting and locating these devices. So much so that for 70 years the main tool for anti-submarine search has been sonar [1]. Since then, Underwater Acoustic Detection has only been perfected, making systems such as the SOSUS network or ocean surveillance vessels widespread, all topics that we will discuss in the following lines.
