The Balkans: new arms race?

The Balkans are generating a new wave of security concerns. Bosnia and Herzegovina has been plagued by a growing political crisis for years, tensions between Serbs and Kosovar Albanians have not disappeared and the increase in defense spending in the region has motivated talks about a possible arms race. There is a clear disparity in the conception of strategy and security depending on the country. While the alarm cannot yet be sounded, the efforts of some governments to flex their muscle and promote heated rhetoric of military competition is eroding mutual trust at the regional level.
