The role of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Ukrainian war has been muted at best. The inability to carry out amphibious operations and the sinking of its flagship, the cruiser "Moskva", have made some of its shortcomings clear. A situation that has its origins in the years prior to the invasion of Ukraine and that is a consequence of economic, industrial and doctrinal problems, as well as the sanctions following the annexation of Crimea. In this first part, we focus on the background, studying the Russian plans prior to 2022, the strategic changes and the state of the Fleet, before proceeding to talk about the military operations carried out since February 24 of last year.
