Towards Nuclear Warfighting

North Korea's nuclear strategy is an enigma even to many experts. Over the years it has evolved to change dramatically both in its means and in its usefulness. Throughout the following lines we will try to shed some light on this issue, also trying to offer a comprehensible explanation. North Korea's nuclear strategy has been evolving throughout the following four phases: 1) the search for diplomatic prestige and bargaining chip for international recognition (until 2003), 2) as a negotiating lever to achieve a regime of arms limitation and control favorable to the interests of North Korea (until approximately 2011); 3) assured nuclear retaliation (until 2015); 4) warfighting/nuclear combat, at least in some partial but relevant aspects (since approximately 2015).
