7. SECOND REPUBLIC

7.1. Azaña Reform (1931)

The Decree of May 25, 1931 abolished the positions of captain and lieutenant general and, therefore, the military regions15. The peninsula was divided into eight organic divisions with two infantry brigades, which were numbered consecutively. The occupation forces of the protectorate, under the command of a major general, were divided between two constituencies of the immediately lower employment. The military commands of the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands remained independent (map 10).
