Both on the current battlefield and the one we may find ourselves in in the near future, the first basic rule for the most powerful nations is to try to achieve air superiority. To pursue this objective there is nothing better than a large combat device focused on air superiority, precisely what the Chengdu J-20 intends to be, developed as a consequence of the tremendous display of air power carried out by the international coalition that acted on Iraq in 1991. Chinese military officials, after carefully analyzing what happened, were convinced that, to be competitive, they would have to make a qualitative leap of several orders of magnitude in order to close the gap with their potential competitors, in reference to the United States. The US and its allies, especially Japan and South Korea, but also Taiwan, the country they aspire to and around whose annexation all Chinese military preparations revolve. The Chengdu J-20 is intended to be China's answer to American air superiority.
