Increase in military response, rise of jihadism and future challenges for Somalia

Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda's proxy in Somalia, has been consolidating its power in the Horn of Africa for fifteen years. Since then, all kinds of international missions have taken place to counter the effects of jihadism and piracy. Now, the African Union and the United States are going to deploy more troops on the ground to increase the military response and try to stop the rise of jihadism in the region. Al-Shabaab poses a threat that goes beyond attacks, as it controls border posts, moves freely in the arms trade and even sometimes acts in collusion with the Somali government. For all these reasons, we analyze the new military missions in Somalia, the real power of Al-Qaeda's proxy and the future challenges of the East African country.
