Guardian 30 by Escribano Mechanical & Engineering

After many ideas and comings and goings, the VCR 8×8 program seems to be moving forward with the assignment of the contract to the TESS Defense consortium, of which Escribano Mechanical & Engineering (EM&E) is a part. The Madrid company will be in charge of the design and manufacturing of the weapons systems, starting with the Guardian 30 tower, to which we dedicate this article. A novel design, the result of the ability of EM&E's young engineers to take advantage of the design and simulation tools and the advanced machinery that they have at their disposal at their headquarters in Alcalá de Henares and that allows them to renounce techniques such as casting or welding, betting everything on high precision machining. A different solution whose characteristics we analyze in depth in the following lines. A few days ago we had the opportunity to visit both the Escribano Mechanical & Engineering factory in Alcalá de Henares, as well as the old facilities [Keep reading…]

Escribano's LISS programme

The LISS program is the latest great innovation from the Spanish company Escribano Mechanical & Engineering. It is an autonomous and distributed drone swarm system designed to tackle very diverse missions, from ISR/ISTAR to ground attack, border control, spills or forest fires, damage assessment or location of victims of shipwrecks or natural disasters, among others. It is a pioneering project, which has the support of the DGAM and, if it really fulfills what was announced, it will be a commercial success and will mark a before and after for the Spanish defense industry. Furthermore, it will place Spain within the exclusive group of countries capable of developing this type of technologies. A select club of which no other member state of the European Union is yet a part. On more than one occasion we have referred in these pages to the "RMA of Information", born [Keep reading…]

Spain urgently needs a National Strategy for drones

The recent approval, by the United Kingdom, of the document "Defence Drone Strategy: The UK's Approach to Defense Uncrewed Systems" and the investment announced to support its implementation represent the first decisive step, by a European power, in order to integrate unmanned air, naval and land systems in their armed forces at all levels, from tactical to strategic. An initiative that will also require a significant doctrinal and industrial effort and that aims to provide coherence to all current and future programs and projects in pursuit of a common objective. The question that the British decision raises, in the case of our country, is evident: Does Spain need a National Strategy for drones that follows the British example? And the answer is just as resounding: yes. (Continue…) Dear reader, this article is exclusively for paying users. If you want to access the text [Keep reading…]

The laser on the battlefield

The history of the use of lasers on the battlefield is full of disappointments and hopes that were never fully fulfilled. However, this technology has continued to develop until it has become an indispensable element for the operation of multiple systems. Beyond indirect uses, its use as a weapon has also benefited, in recent years, from notable advances, which brings the real use of lasers on the battlefield closer and closer to what science fiction and imagination of promising writers and screenwriters. Throughout this extensive article we explain not only the principles behind its operation, but also the different applications, evolution, state of the art and future possibilities of laser technology both as a key element of sensors or communications systems. , as in the form of a weapon. The war against inertia

Regardless of whether concepts such as "Military Revolution", "Technical-Military Revolution" or "Revolution in Military Affairs" are correct or not, they serve to name a series of non-linear changes that affect the war and everything that surrounds it. From the way of fighting to the material used and from the organization to the industry that supports the armies, from time to time they are all shaken by unexpected changes to which it is often difficult to give a response. Once in war, those who have not been able to keep up with the pace of innovation die swept away by it. It could be said, therefore, that the true struggle of nations and armed forces is not so much against the enemy, but rather a war against inertia. The SILAM program

In December 2023, the Spanish Ministry of Defense made public the award, negotiated and without publicity, of the SILAM (High Mobility Launcher System) program. The project has been awarded to the companies EXPAL and Escribano, whose work will be based on the Israeli Lynx/PULS rocket launcher. Thanks to this agreement, both companies will benefit from technological transfers, in search of industrial sovereignty. Despite this, there are several doubts that the SILAM program raises. Some related to the capacity of future launchers and their ammunition. Others with their cost. Questions that we will try to answer in this article. FPV drone used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. While the idea that we are facing a military revolution or even a change in the nature of warfare is tempting, a deeper examination yields somewhat different results. Even so, drones are being the protagonists of the Revolution in Military Robotics Affairs and their impact, if Defense Ministries such as the Spanish one do not take quick and decisive measures, investing in "red teams" and in an indigenous industry, threatens with dragging ourselves. The third military revolution

The war in Ukraine is leaving us with shocking images and incredible figures, many of them related in one way or another to the emergence of drones on the battlefield. Its massive use, given its ridiculous cost and its very high lethality, has completely disrupted the calculations of costs and benefits, putting the advantage of the spear side over the shield at the tactical level and causing paralysis at the operational and strategic levels. Although these are changes of enormous magnitude, they do not imply - as some authors claim - neither a change in the nature of war, nor a Military Revolution comparable to the one that once brought about the arrival of gunpowder in Europe. In fact, that of drones is one more of the Revolutions in Military Affairs associated - here it is correct to use this term - to which [Keep reading…]

NATO C-UAS Exercise TIE23

During the last few days, the C-UAS TIE23 exercise organized by NCIA, the NATO Communications and Information Agency, has been held at the Lieutenant General Best base, located in Vredepeel, in the Netherlands. There, in addition to carrying out various integration tests between systems for both detection and neutralization of the participating companies using protocols such as SAPIENT, simulations and tests were carried out aimed at testing solutions against what is surely the greatest threat they currently face. not only armies, but also civil infrastructures. An interesting exercise but which, once again, suffered from the lack of realistic scenarios, at least taking into account the evolution of the threat in the last year and a half. Anti-aircraft defense in the Navy

Since the consecration of air power during the Second World War, all navies have adapted to operating with the permanent threat of attacks from the air. They have done so to the point that this need to provide a capable anti-aircraft defense has decisively influenced the design and classification of warships. Since then, this threat has only evolved, as manned attack aircraft have been joined by anti-ship missiles, either launched from the air or by other ships (as the main naval combat weapon), as well as an increasing variety of unmanned devices.
