Rare earths in the strategic competition between great powers

The fight against the Chinese monopoly

Strategic competition between great powers takes place in different fields and scenarios. In this sense, one of the assets available to the People's Republic of China, an actor that openly acknowledges the existence of such competition, are rare earths. These have been used in the past by Beijing as a geopolitical weapon in disputes with other states in order to ensure the achievement of its own interests. Recognising the PCCh the need to control the global supply of them and taking into consideration the dependence of the rest of the actors both for their production systems and even for the transition towards green energies, the place they occupy in the present competition should be analysed and how affected actors view and address such dependency.
