The (im)balance of terror

In the general press there is a tendency to analyze the Ukrainian crisis in too superficial terms. There is talk of an aggressive Putin and a defenseless Ukraine or the opposite, depending on the environment. They talk about the importance of Russian gas, the need to respect international legislation, and ask for prudence and dialogue. Of course, reference is made to the existing divisions in Ukraine itself, to American, European, Russian and even Chinese interests, as well as a thousand other topics. Very rarely, however, is the root of the problem addressed: 1) the growing imbalance between the Russian and American armed forces, which extends to nuclear arsenals; 2) the feeling of anxiety that this generates in Russia and; 3) the window of opportunity offered by a European Union that does not take charge of its part of deterrence.
