The history of the S-80 Program is fascinating. It has all the elements of any great novel: adventure, deception and jealousy, dedication, improvement, failure and in the end (although it is too early to say for sure), success. Far from following the rigid agenda expected of a military project of this magnitude, it has suffered delays, been on the verge of cancellation, forced to improvise and rethink each step taken over and over again, and to leave aside immature technologies.
