Oil, pirates and kidnappings in the Gulf of Guinea

Petropirates not only steal crude oil, but also, in scenarios like Venezuela, more and more machinery and even commonly used tools with which to make a small profit, given the situation in the country. More than 90% of African imports and exports move by sea. The Gulf of Guinea extends from Angola to Senegal and covers 20 countries and more than 6.000 kilometers of coastline. It is also one of those critical maritime routes, related to the extraction of hydrocarbons in the Nigerian region of the Niger Delta, which has been the fundamental focus of maritime insecurity in this area. For the European Union, the Gulf of Guinea is a strategic area, given that 10% of the crude oil and 4% of the natural gas it imports come from this region. Also for Spain: 15% of the oil it imported in 2018 came from Nigeria, its main supplier.
