As a consequence of the chaos resulting from the so-called “Arab Spring” and the geopolitical events that have occurred in the Middle East in the last decade, a new map of balances, power struggles, political vacuums and failed states has been reached. This unstable breeding ground has considerably favored the presence of terrorist organizations and the interference of countries with power or ideological ambitions in the internal affairs of other states, as well as the rise of an Islamist discourse that has served as a basis, in turn, to a populist discourse that seeks both to stand on “the shoulders of the poor” and to exploit prevailing xenophobia and classism.
