The Tunisian affiliate of Al Qaeda

Born in Mecca in the year 622, Okba Ibn Nafaa was a Muslim general who played a prominent role in the conquest of the Maghreb ("West"), helping to spread Islam to North African territories that are currently the countries of Algeria. , Libya, Tunisia and Morocco. In the year 670, as commander of Muslim forces, he crossed the Egyptian desert establishing the city of Qairouan, in modern-day Tunisia, a location that he used as an outpost. After a succession of victories, some renowned such as the one he obtained outnumbered in the Roman town of Tahert (in present-day Algeria) he continued his advance towards the Atlantic Ocean.
