Historically, the extremist vision of Islamic doctrine whose interpretation sometimes led to acts of terrorist violence was a practically unknown phenomenon in Morocco. This trend was reversed in the 70s. In 1972 the group Shabiba al-Islamiyya (Islamic Youth) came onto the Moroccan scene.
