The panoply of measures that can be taken to prevent the hijacking of a ship are usually divided into two groups: lethal and non-lethal. Of the former, the hiring of armed security guards has been confirmed as the most successful. Among the latter we can mention the use of sonic and water cannons, the deployment of concertinas, and the use of the ship's own fire hoses. However, perhaps the non-lethal deterrent measure that has proven most effective is the use of a panic room, also called a citadel. In practice, it consists of locking the crew in a safe place that cannot be accessed by pirates who have boarded the ship.
